Music essay.1

The marching band is coming down the street! You smile as you see people clapping and cheering. You tap your fingers to the rhythm as the drums beat, the flutes whistle, and the trumpets sound their resonating notes. But why settle to be an observer? In this essay you will discover why you should play a musical instrument.
One reason to start learning an instrument is that music is a means of glorifying God. In the book of Psalms, David and other authors wrote praises to God. Yes, the Psalms are poetry, but they were actually the hymnal of Israel. Instruments were used as well, as Psalm 150: 3-5 shows us.
3 Praise Him with the sound of the
trumpet; Praise Him with
the lute and harp! 4 Praise Him with the timbrel and
dance; Praise Him with
stringed instruments and flutes! 5 Praise Him with loud
cymbals; Praise Him with
clashing cymbals!

Music can glorify God in more then one way, however. Playing your instrument in church is one ministry that can glorify God. There are other venues where you can use your God-given talent as well. Some examples are nursing homes, summer camps, and in music concerts.
Another reason to learn an instrument is that it provides opportunities that otherwise would not be available. An example of this would be an experience I had this year. I play the piano, and I was presented with an opportunity to be the accompanist for a musical. I took the job, and I gained experience in working with other musicians as well as piano performance in front of an audience. I also made a good amount of money. But theater work is not the only opportunity musical ability provides.
Teaching a musical instrument is another example. It is a good way to earn revenue(often twenty or more dollars an hour) and a chance to practice patience and kindness with your students.
Another reason to play an instrument is that it can help you in other areas of life. There are studies that show that children who take musical lessons score higher on tests then those who do not.
Music education can be a positive force on all aspects of a child's life,
particularly on their academic success. The study of music by children has been
linked to higher scores on the SAT and other learning aptitude tests, and has
proven to be an invaluable tool in classrooms across the country.[1]

Learning an instrument can also help you to be disciplined. I am definitely not as disciplined as is possible, but I have been steady in my piano practicing. And I have reaped benefits from this. So a lesson can be learned from taking music lessons: steady work pays off.
Perhaps I have convinced you to learn to play an instrument. Just think, you could be glorifying God, obtaining opportunities that you otherwise couldn’t have, and helping yourself in other ways. And just because you play the piano, or the guitar, or the drums, or one of the many other instruments that are out there. So go out and do it! You could be in that marching band.

Brainstorming Episode II

Hmmmm. What could the topic of my next essay be? Maybe something like why you shouldn't smoke, or why you should take up a sport, or why you should have a cell phone. (Of course, I don't have a cell phone. But maybe after reading my wonderful essay, my dad would get me one). Choices, choices.

My essay

World War II. What do you think when you hear someone say that? Perhaps some of you would think of the Holocaust and the six-million Jews killed. Six-million. My country fought in World War II to prevent the evil that caused those deaths (and many more) from taking over the world. More then 407,000 American soldiers died in World War II.[1] But over sixty years afterwards, Americans are being killed in far greater numbers. Approximately 47,282,923 babies have been aborted in the U.S.A from 1973-2005.[2] That is more than seven times the number of Jews killed in the holocaust and more than one-hundred fifteen times the number of American soldiers killed in World War II.
Abortion is wrong. We, the people of the United States of America, should fight against abortion. In this essay you will discover why you should do so.
The first reason we should fight against abortion is that it negatively impacted historical society. Even before the Roe vs. Wade decision in 1973, both legal and illegal abortions took place around the world. Ph.D John W. Klotz wrote a book on abortion.
The earliest records of an abortive technique go back about 4,600 years to an
ancient Chinese work…which prescribes the use of mercury to induce an
abortion.[3]

As evidenced in the previous quote, mercury was used in some ancient abortions. Other harmful substances were ingested to cause abortions as well, and would sometimes cause the death of the woman. “In 1815, a British doctor wrote…that abortions were tantamount to suicide.”[4] As you can see, abortions were dangerous. (and still can be, as you will discover later in this essay).
Abortion was not the only danger babies in history faced, however. Infanticide also occurred in ancient cultures. In the Bible we see examples of how God judged societies that murdered children.

And they have built the high places of Tophet, which is in the valley of the son
of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I commanded
them not, neither came it into my heart.
Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that it shall no more be called Tophet, nor the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of slaughter: for they shall bury in Tophet,
till there be no place.

That text of scripture (Jeremiah 7: 31-32) shows us that God did not like it when the people of Judah sacrificed their children to false gods. God is holy, and he hates sin. Infanticide and abortion are no exception, and God judged them.
Not only did abortion negatively affect history, it is also hurting modern society. That is another reason why we should stand against it.
One of the things abortion is promoting is irresponsibility. Why should people practice sexual abstinence before marriage if there is no responsibility to take if they don’t? Why should she worry about getting pregnant when she can simply abort the child? Indeed, abortion is sometimes used as birth-control. Does this irresponsibility really benefit our society?
Abortion is also hurting women’s health. The effects can be devastating.
Some have suggested that abortion can increase the chance of developing breast cancer. Also, women who have had abortions may have problems if they ever become pregnant again, such as delivering their baby prematurely.[5] But physical pain is not the only problem abortion causes. Listen to this testimony.
I had an abortion 12 years ago, and I have suffered from it since the day it was
done. There is no grief worse than losing a child, unless it is knowing that you
have intentionally killed your own, out of sheer selfishness. I have had
nightmares, flashbacks of the procedure including the physical pain I
experienced, and periods of severe depression. I am still taking 3 medications
for depression and anxiety. I wish I could go back in time and take it all back
- but we can only move forward.[6]

Some women claim that they do not regret their abortion; perhaps some truly don’t. But there are many women who recognize that they are guilty of murder, and some of them have given testimonies like the one above. Tell these women that abortion isn’t harmful, and hear what they have to say.
So abortion was detrimental to society in the past, and still is today. But another reason to stand against abortion is that it will affect the future. What could the effects of abortion be if it is allowed to proceed unchecked? None of us, as humans, can know what will happen five, ten, or a hundred years down the road. However, we can extrapolate.
If many Americans today don’t think the life of an unborn baby is worth saving, what could this country look like in fifty years? Will this be a society that allows euthanasia of the elderly, or perhaps even infanticide? Could America become a country that eliminates certain ethnic groups because they are thought to be of lesser value? These ideas may seem far-fetched, but in a society where life has little or no value, much wrong can be committed. However, even more could happen.
How long will a righteous God allow this sinful country to endure? God will judge sin, and America may suffer deeply if it continues on its current path. It is not a guarantee that things here in the U.S.A. will go on as always, unhindered. By murdering unborn babies, and in many other ways, this country is crying out for judgment.
As you can see, abortion has negatively affected society in the past, present, and will continue to do so in the future. I implore you to fight against it. Charge the enemy like the soldiers on Omaha beach did in 1944. They protected millions of Americans. Will you do the same?

Cut off thine hair, O Jerusalem, and cast it away, and take up a lamentation on
high places; for the LORD hath rejected and forsaken the generation of his
wrath.
For the children of Judah have done evil in my sight, saith the
LORD: they have set their abominations in the house which is called by my name,
to pollute it.
And they have built the high places of Tophet, which is
in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in
the fire; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my heart.
Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that it shall no
more be called Tophet, nor the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of
slaughter: for they shall bury in Tophet, till there be no place.
And
the carcases of this people shall be meat for the fowls of the heaven, and for
the beasts of the earth; and none shall fray them away.

That text of scripture (Jeremiah 7: 29-33) shows us that God did not like it when the people of Judah sacrificed their children to false gods. God is holy, and he hates sin. Infanticide and abortion are no exception, and God judged them.
Now that you’ve seen how abortion affected people in history, you might be wondering how it has affected modern culture. What has abortion done to the United States of America? Has it indeed had negative effects? My answer is yes. One of the things abortion has promoted in the U.S.A. is irresponsibility. Think about it. Why should people practice sexual abstinence before marriage if there is no responsibility to take if they don’t? Why should she worry about getting pregnant when she can simply abort the child? Indeed, abortion is sometimes used as birth-control. Does irresponsibility really benefit our society? No.

World War II. What do you think of when you hear someone say that? Perhaps the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Maybe the hard fought battles on Omaha Beach, Iwo Jima, and other spots around the globe. Perhaps some of you would think of the Holocaust and the six-million Jews killed. That’s a big number. Six-million. My country fought in World War II to prevent the evil that caused those deaths (and many more) from taking over the world. According to Wikipedia, more then 407,000 American soldiers died in World War II. They died defending the cause of freedom. Unfortunately, that freedom that they fought and died for has allowed Americans to murder the innocent. Approximately 47,282,923 babies have been aborted in the U.S.A since 1973.[1] That’s more than seven times the number of Jews killed in the holocaust and more than one-hundred fifteen times the number of American soldiers killed in World War II! Abortion is wrong. We, the people of the United States of America, should stand and vote against abortion. In this essay you will discover one of the reasons to do so; because abortion is detrimental to society.
[1] Source: The Guttmacher Institute (a special affiliate to Planned Parenthood), which actively collects the abortion data directly from providers. All numbers reported are voluntary; there are no laws requiring abortionists to report to any national agency the numbers of abortions they perform. 2001-2002 are estimates by Guttmacher; 2003-2005 are estimates by the National Right to Life Committee.

Hey everyone, this is Josh. Give me some input on this and tell me what you think, will ya? (And don't be afraid to tell me it stinks, if that's what you think) Btw, I copied and pasted the footnote; is that allowed?

Brainstorming

Yeah, I did do some brainstorming. The End. Well no...not yet. My thesis is supposed to be that abortion is detrimental to society, or something like that. So anyway, I thought some, and I did some research as well. I wrote some stuff down on paper such as abortion hurts society because it takes away citizens that could benefit this country, and that perhaps if abortion was illegal, there would have been someone to prevent the 9/11 attacks. So yeah... How's that???

5 things that make this article affective:
1. The illustrations
2. It is well-written
3. How he quotes other sources (the Bible, Shakespeare, and Charles Spurgeon).
4. How he ties the beginning to the ending
5. How he makes an application
